So you’ve finally plucked up the nerve to get started on the home renovation/redecoration project you’ve been thinking about for so long – good for you! You’re probably excited but also perhaps apprehensive about taking on something like this – will you do a good job? How will you prevent your furniture from getting ruined? What can you do to really make the space look different? Well here are some tips to help you out.
1. Have a clue
The first thing you’ll need to get you started is a clear idea about what you want: what do you want to change and what would you like to retain? Redecorating is a great time to clear the clutter and get rid of things you either don’t like or don’t need and get things that you’ve needed or coveted over the years. So have a clear plan before you start.
2. Protect your furniture
If you’re going to keep all or most of the basic furniture, you need to go about protecting it. Firstly shift it all into the center of the room and then use decorators dust sheets to protect it from paint, glue and other redecorating materials. They will come in handy later as well – you can use them to protect the furniture from dust, light and so on if you plan to go out of town for a significant period of time.
3. Personalize
Now that you’re redecorating, make sure that the newly decorated space reflects more of you and your personality.
4. Choose the paint with care
It’s not just the color scheme you need to pick with care. You also want to use paint or wall paper from a manufacturer you know you can trust. So read up reviews, ask around the neighborhood or your friends and relatives for pointers on how to make a selection.
5. Add accents
To make a real change from what the room looked like before, you will want to change not only the color on the walls and rearrange the furniture, but you should ideally make value additions to the space. Consider getting some accent furniture such as an interesting chair or coffee table, some interesting wall art or decals and perhaps some real or artificial plants. These can really transform a room.
6. Don’t forget lighting
This is another element that can alter the look of a room completely. Adding track lighting, interesting lamps on a table or floor lamps in the corners of a room, focus lighting for the highlights of the room – all of these can create a sea change.
