So, is it really any wonder that there are some truly remarkable structures to be found all over the globe – amazing, fascinating, inspiring, mind boggling, even bizarre? We take a look at some of these spectacular and unique home designs of the world.
1. Upside Down House
The Upside Down House in Germany is well known to anyone with an interest in unusual architecture. Designed by Polish architects Klaudiusz Golos and Sebastian Mikiciuk the house and everything in it is upside down. It is so disorienting that is only an exhibit rather than an actual house.
2. Antilla
Reportedly the most expensive home in the world is Antilla in Mumbai India, built by business tycoon Mukesh Ambani. No two floor of the 27 storey building are the same. It has swimming pools, gardens, a movie theatre, a ballroom, spa, salon, dance and yoga studio and even a snow room!
3. Everingham Rotating House
The Everingham Rotating House in Taree, Australia is, well, a rotating house. It can take 30 to 120 minutes for the house to spin an entire 360 degrees. As to why one may want to live in a rotating house, it helps to optimize natural light and heat and is built on eco friendly principles.
4. Bubble House
Pierre Cardin’s highly eccentric Bubble House was created by Antti Lovag. It apparently suited the designer’s rather avant garde tastes down to the hilt.
5. Krzywy Domek
The Krzywy Domek or crooked house in Sopot, Poland may look as if it was melted and then reconstituted, but is part of an actually shopping center. It was inspired by fairy tale illustrations.
6. Nautilus
The Nautilus in Mexico City is part home part artist’s palette. It looks like a conch shell from outside and the interiors have grass “carpets” and stone paths and overhead windows among other wonders.
7. Sliding House
The Sliding House Suffolk, England does what its name suggests: it slides. The sliding glass structure moves to fit over or extend beyond the static house to form a guest house or a green house as required.
8. Shoe House, Mpumalanga
It isn’t just one but several shoe houses that exist around the world. This one in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa is not only shaped like a shoe, it comes complete with laces!
9. Mushroom House
The Mushroom House in Cincinnati Ohio is a fanciful structure created by Terry Browne, and features a jumbled mishmash of shapes that are fully inhabitable!
